Passing the Hood By Air Flag to Rolling Ray

“Despite what we’re told, the American flag has never represented freedom for Black people,” wrote Channing Hargrove in PAPER’s America cover story with Hood By Air. “For many it has become a tangible symbol of the white supremacy, hate and intolerance that has always been prevalent in our country.”

Which is why HBA, the luxury brand famous for disrupting old ideas, redesigned the flag by flipping it upside down and introducing the statement, “New World Citizen.”

For any new symbol to take root, it needs people to support and carry out its values, so PAPER sent out the HBA flag to members in our community — individuals who’re similarly sparking conversations and challenging pre-existing ideas across internet culture, music and more.

Following Charles Gardiner, Rolling Ray — the internet sensation who introduced “purr” into the 2020 vernacular — answers questions provided by HBA Creative Director Shayne Oliver and poses with the “New World Citizen” flag over Zoom for Full Tac.

How do you receive your information?

I receive a lot of my information from my phone. I’m a person who uses their phone every day of my life. It’s essential. I like to be on Twitter a lot. I don’t really like Instagram. Twitter is very informative, especially because it’s the now. It’s alive, how people feel. So I check today’s trends, the next day’s trends. I’m always following trends. Information can come through many different forms: Shade Room, media outlets. In my opinion, today’s society is so hooked on the now and your phone that information just comes to you. Sometimes you’re sitting there, scrolling down and then boom, breaking news. You become persuaded and that’s why I say, in my opinion, some news is biased. We’re so stuck with what we see on our timeline as news and information that it can be false information. Some things do need a fact check, nowadays.

What symbolism most represents your online culture?

The wheelchair emoji. That symbolizes me. When people use the wheelchair emoji even on Twitter, they automatically think it’s me because I am the King of Wheelchairs. I’m out here on the front lines and I represent everybody in a wheelchair, in my opinion. So when they see those emojis, they see it’s a Rolling Ray emoji or somebody will say, “Why are you using that Rolling Ray emoji?” That’s my symbol.

Who is the last person you hugged?

The last person I hugged was my guy friend. We hugged off of bad terms, in a way. Because recently, I just thought he was acting different and crazy and so I wanted to hug. Sometimes a hug brings people back together. You need that hug in order to appreciate someone’s love. So I said to my friend, “Give me a hug.” Because I’m ensuring that I care for you and I love you. That’s a good question, oh wow.

Who would you pass the flag onto next?

I’d pass the New World Citizen flag onto someone who’s 10 years younger than me in a wheelchair. And I say that because 10 years ago, I didn’t know I’d be at this point in my life. I always wanted to be famous, I always wanted to be the King of Wheelchairs, but I would give this flag to someone who I think is going to become someone better than me, or like me in a way. “United We Stand,” but we didn’t stand, we rode. I’m giving you this flag to show that you can become your own symbol and become the next wheelchair emoji yourself. Don’t just think that because you don’t have representation that the world is against you. We could be in an even greater pandemic 10 years from now. I want you to always think of this flag as us united together.

Other than Hood By Air, what is HBA an acronym for?

Head Bitch Administration. [Laughs]

Do you exist in real life?

Hell yeah, I exist in real life. I think without me, there would be no citizens in this world. I bring so much to the table. I know my worth, I know myself. If I was to die tomorrow, my symbol that I stand for, that I rode for, would always be remembered. Even when I go outside, I’m thinking about how many people wanna see me, wanna take a picture. Is my outfit OK? Is my look OK? Am I who I want to be? Am I a citizen that can represent myself more than anything?

But I can be bigger than what I am now. I have the cards, I have the personality. I have everything that I want. But if you know yourself, you know when something isn’t time to be shone. You as an artist, as a person, you know when you’re doing too much and when it’s time to tone it down. It’s not always about you, the world doesn’t revolve around you. I could be bigger, but I choose not to. I need time to brainstorm, time to organize and put my cards on the table. I may have a book of Spades, but I don’t have the Ace of Spades yet. So somebody can copy what I do and do it better. My advice to people and myself — music, reality TV, whatever I choose to do or be great at — take your time, be patient. You wanna feel like your worth isn’t being taken advantage of, but you have to remain on these people’s toes. Purr.

How do you receive your information?

I’m a social media influencer, so I make comedy videos. It’s usually Instagram, Facebook, now TikTok, but that’s where I get it. I’m definitely a tech boy. I’m always on my phone, it’s ridiculous how much I’m on my phone. But for me being a creative, getting my information as far as inspiration for the stuff I make, it’s usually in and around the neighborhood. If I’m going to the grocery store and I had a little argument, I see something and internalize that. Usually those scenarios are when I’m outside. I do have a little social anxiety and a lot of people don’t assume that because I’m such this bubbly energy online. So I’m a big observer, I always just watch. I’m watching in the background and taking everything in.

What symbolism most represents your online culture?

For me, it’s comedy. I’m not a stand-up comedian. I’m more so an actor and I’m usually portraying Black women, because my character is a makeup of all the women I’ve encountered in and around New York. Especially being from Harlem, I’ve hung out with so many different types of females, though. Like, the super ratchet ones, the boujee ones. I would definitely say New York women as a whole. I always take different parts and then exaggerate it for my character when I make my comedy. I feel like a New York woman is kind of like myself: Very blunt, straightforward, don’t care. They do have feelings, of course, but it’s straight to the point. I’m going to tell you how it is and it is what it is. I love that, I’m all that. I love that energy. I’m also a Sag, so I’m very straightforward. This is how I feel and you just got to get on board with it.

Who was the last person you hugged?

The last person was my best friend.

Who would you pass the flag onto next?

It’s like passing the torch. I would definitely say one of my younger sisters. Where I am now, I haven’t even started but I love to be able to share my craft with so many people. The feeling that you get and being able to have people say, “Hey, your stuff makes my day.” I can be in a bad mood, and I’m uplifted and happy.

Other than Hood By Air, what is HBA an acronym for?

Hood Bitch Anyhow.

Do you exist in real life?

From a personal perspective, I feel like I’m half and half, and I say that because being gay and being Black, I have moments where I do feel like I’m present, but then I also feel like there’s parts of me that I hide when I’m in society, you know what I mean? Like, I have to tone it down a little bit and I can’t really be myself. It’s annoying, but it’s something that if I feel. I am open and I’m out and my family knows and everything, so you would think that when I walk out the house, I will just be like 100 all the time, just be myself. But it’s so different because everyone isn’t like my family, everyone isn’t the same, everyone has a different view. I never want to put myself in any type of danger, so I’m always hiding parts of myself because I want to blend in with society instead of being that person. It’s also tied into my social anxiety where I don’t want that much attention on me when I’m out, but I’m trying to work on being myself.

Passing the Hood By Air Flag to Nomi Ruiz

Below, Nomi Ruiz — musician, actress, writer and a self-proclaimed “Renaissance woman” — answers questions provided by HBA Creative Director Shayne Oliver and poses with the “New World Citizen” flag over Zoom for Full Tac.

How do you receive your information?

I guess, the internet, you know, and word of mouth. It depends on what type of information. It could be friends texting me stuff, or I guess it’s our phones now. I have my newsfeed set up to give me information I prefer and block information that I’m not really into. I try to be really careful to not just bombard myself with a bunch of stuff. I’ve muted some things.

What symbolism most represents your online culture?

I do have this logo that I use for a project, called Jessica 6. It’s the number six with a spider woman in it and she has six legs. And so that’s been used by a lot of fans and people I feel connected with and people have gotten it tattooed. I wanted it to feel like a gang symbol, so that people could feel like they’re a part of whatever messages I’m putting out there with my music. When people see that image, it makes them think they’re a part of whatever it is that I’m creating and the messages that I’m spreading.

I wanted the spider to feel like this sort of like extraterrestrial being. I wanted it to be femme and I also wanted it to be otherworldly. I think it represents individuality and not conforming and sort of separating yourself from others. I think people that like to rock the t-shirts and logo, they feel special like they’re one of a kind. They sort of separate themselves from society.

The name Jessica 6 came from Logan’s Run. It’s this super old-school ’70s sci-fi movie and there’s this character in it Jessica 6. It’s about a society that lives in the underground and they don’t realize it until someone rejects the rules that they’re supposed to be given. And she believes that there’s something more and breaks the surface eventually.

Who was the last person you hugged?

The last person I hugged… I think it was my friend Laurice, who’s moving to Mexico City. She’s one of my home girls and we had a little hang the other day. She’s a cool girl.

Who would you pass the flag onto next?

My friend Anohni. She’s a singer and she’s pretty major. She’s very vocal about shifting the landscape of society and the world at large. I think she’d be a good representative of this sort of banner.

Other than Hood By Air, what is HBA an acronym for?

Home Bound At (Last).

Do you exist in real life?

I guess that depends on the definition of real life. Who knows, right now? IRL, URL [Laughs]. I guess I grew up in many different forms of reality. I think I make an effort to make sure I’m present in whatever people’s idea of reality is nowadays, just to make sure that me and where I come from and the people that identify with me are represented.

I think about multiple realities. There’s IRL, sort of in the flesh, and there’s society walking down the street and there’s the idea of who I am in people’s minds when it comes to… like you said information, when people receive information. It’s so foreign to all of us. No one really knows what people are receiving. That is an alternate reality in itself: receiving information. I try to make sure that I’m a part of whatever information is getting out there, whether that’s writing or music or whatever artistic endeavor that I’ve been taking on in that moment. I hope that it breaks through that version of other people’s alternate realities… information reality, I guess? The information highway?

6ix9ine – BREAKIN IT DOWN Lyrics

[Hook: 6ix9ine & Hudson Flo]
I’m breaking it down (stupid!)
A scam, I heard that boy running around with the packs
So I’m taking him down (yeah)
Oh my gosh, they live by the cold (you fucking dummy)
You know we ain’t making a sound (what)
You thinking about playing around with my respect
I’m making it blaow (blaow!) I’m making it blaow (blaow!)
I’m breaking it down (what)
A scam, I heard that boy running around with the packs
So I’m taking him down (ywhat)
Oh my gosh, they live by the cold
You know we ain’t making a sound (big stupid)
You thinking about playing around with my respect
I’m making it blaow (blaow!) I’m making it blaow (blaow!)

[Verse 1: 6ix9ine]
Wish I could bring Pun back, blaow, nigga, run that
‘Til they let Rowdy out, we gon’ let these semis out
Wish I could bring Stacks back, Chad, let the MAC clap
‘Til they free Biggavel, gotta give you niggas hell
Blicky make the nigga yell, beam hit his knees
Made him scream, when that nigga fell, shootout with the law
Or the morgue ‘fore I sit in jail, niggas say they love me
I can see it in these niggas eyes, they don’t wish me well
I don’t need their company, they smilin’ when a nigga fell
Seein’ that I’m poppin’, then the shotgun, like the third round
Order stitches for these snitches, dead men tell no tales
Diggin’ ditches for these niggas, toss ’em in, so well
Drive-by, leave him in the street, nigga, road kill
HBA, gold fronts, let me guess, “So trill”?
Nigga, this is New York, make the wrong move
And the goons let the tool spark, work hard and move salt
8 Ball like pool holes, cracked like the pavement
Diesel like the gas station, trap out the basement
Blow in the Pyrex, mask on our faces
Let ’em act sketch, but this lead will erase ’em, on gang

[Hook: 6ix9ine & Hudson Flo]
I’m breaking it down (stupid!)
A scam, I heard that boy running around with the packs
So I’m taking him down (yeah)
Oh my gosh, they live by the cold (fucking dummy)

[Verse 2: Hudson Flo]
Creeping through the darkness

6ix9ine – Wish You Never Done That Lyrics

[Verse]
Wish you never done that, I come back
Wish you never plugged that, I bust back
Wish you never wore that, so run that
Wish I could bring South back, I love Stat
Wish you never done that, I come back
Wish you never plugged that, I bust back
Wish you never wore that, so run that
Wish I could bring South back, I love Stat

[Verse]
Wish I could bring Pun back
Blaow, nigga, run that
Tear that lil’ body, yeah we gon’ let these hoes out
Shocka bring stacks back, Kyle let the MAC clap
Tell they feet pick up, yeah, ’bout to give you niggas hell
Blicky make the nigga yell, bring me the beams
Made em scream when a nigga fell
Shootout with the law, all the Mark forces in jail
Niggas say they love me
But I can see it in these niggas’ eyes, they don’t wish me well
I don’t need the company, they smiling when a nigga fell
Seein’ that I’m poppin’ them shots I’m like “go out”
40 snitches, 40 snitches, that man’s a no-tell
Digging ditches, 40 niggas, toss ’em in, so well
Drive by, leave him in the street, nigga road-kill
HBA, gold front, let me guess, so trill?

Make the wrong move and the goon let twos spark
