BTS’ ‘Bang Bang Con: The Live’ Broke a Major Record

ARMYs, we did it again. According to Big Hit, BTS’ “Bang Bang Con: The Live” broke the record for viewership of an online concert on Sunday — and did it stunningly, might I add.

With ARMYs around the world quarantined and missing the thrills of a live BTS arena show, “Bang Bang Con: The Live” was about as close as to the real thing as fans could get. The setlist, which included songs from Map of the Soul: 7, was nuanced and highlighted some of the boys’ biggest hits. Fans also praised the quality of the concert, comprised of multiple rooms and stages. Although the event was filmed in Seoul, South Korea, the virtual concert raked in a major peak of 756,000 concurrent viewers across 107 countries and territories.

Dedicated stans on the pop music forum PopHeads on Reddit speculate that this equates to around $19.7 million in ticket sales. While that number is not immediately verifiable, Variety reported that the attendance of the virtual fest was that of “15 shows at a 50,000 seat stadium,” so grossing numbers in the multi-millions of USD might not be that far off.

ARMYs took to Twitter today to share their favorite moments from the 100-minute concert, with many praising the “Boy With Luv” remix performed with LED umbrellas and the boys’ ever-slick choreography. If we’re going to survive the rest of this quarantine, I think fans need a second “Bang Bang Con: The Live” right away. I mean, how else are ARMYs supposed to collect all of the mini BTS tickets?

K-Pop Stans Took Down a Dallas Police Snitch App

K-pop stans are powerful. They virtually control artists’ position on the charts, ruthlessly cancel their enemies, and most recently, sabotaged an effort by the Dallas Police Department to incriminate protesters demanding justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade and other Black victims of police brutality.

Although much of the violence at recent protests has been incited by the police’s use of force, Dallas PD created an app called iWatchDallas for people to submit video footage of “illegal activity” of protestors. Anti-racist K-pop fans wouldn’t stand for it.

Twitter users posted calls for people to spam the app by submitting fancam videos of their favorite artists.

Dallas PD surely didn’t know what hit them as their app was quickly flooded with clips of BTS and BLACKPINK choreo. In perhaps the first direct action-related use of fancams, within hours, the app crashed. The department announced on Twitter today “due to technical difficulties,” the app is “down temporarily.”

The K-pop community, in general, has been vocal about their solidarity with the Black community. According to Dazed, a number of stan accounts for BTS, BLACKPINK and NCT 127 have stopped tweeting about the artists they’re dedicated to, and even censored the band’s names, in order to make space for news and discussions about police violence. Dazed reports that fans resisted trending hashtags about BLACKPINK and Lady Gaga’s “Sour Candy,” as well as NCT 127’s recent victory on K-pop show M Countdown, when under normal circumstances, they have put #Blackpink and #NCT127 at the top of our feeds.

BTS Is Holding a Livestream Concert Next Month

The COVID-19 crisis has put a halt to many things, including the music industry. Festivals have been cancelled, concerts called off and tours put on hold indefinitely. One of the most anticipated tours that’s been postponed is BTS’ Map of the Soul 2020 show.

But the P-pop supergroup is making it up to the fans. The boys are holding a live online concert in June, called Bang Bang Con: The Live. The 90-minute ticketed event will be streamed on Big Hit’s fan community platform, Weverse on June 14 at 6 PM KST.

BTS official on Instagram: “⠀ [방방콘 The Live란?] 서로의 건강과 안전을 지키면서, 방탄소년단과 ARMY가 함께 연결되는 온라인 라이브 콘서트입니다. ⠀ ARMY 여러분의 방에서 멀티뷰로 생동감 있게 즐기는 방탄소년단의 안방 콘서트! ARMY를 위해 준비한…”

The band has been ramping up their online presence amidst the global pandemic. Just last month, they held a concert weekend where they streamed eight of their previous shows for free. Over two million fans tuned in on the two-day event. The group also launched a Weverse online class for learning Korean, to help fans all over the world better connect their music.

Tickets for Bang Bang Con: The Live will be available for purchase on the Weverse Shop on June 1.

YouTube Responds to BTS Video Views Concerns

ARMYs finally got an official update from YouTube over concerns about views disappearing from BTS‘ most recent music video drop for “ON.” One fan investigation appears to show “ON” views decreasing from around 83 million to 48 million. According to YouTube, the vanishing views are the result of standard precautions taken against bots.

“It’s normal to see views slow down, freeze, or adjust while we verify that those are real and accurate,” the official TeamYouTube community support account tweeted in response to an ARMY calling out YouTube’s CEO asking for an explanation.

Fans continued to question TeamYouTube under their reply to the original call-out tweet, with some demanding a more comprehensive explanation, and others simply asking for the views to return to their original count. ARMYs main reason for questioning what appears to be massive leaps in view counts? BTS regularly sells out stadiums, breaks websites, and causes general mass fan hysteria whenever they have a new release. Therefore, ARMYs say, the view counts have to be accurate. Whatever the medium, BTS packs a punch.

View counts, while seemingly innocuous, are actually highly competitive measures of artist support. That’s to say nothing of their impact on streaming profits and chart positions. BTS has both a fervent fanbase and record-breaking view and stream numbers under their belt, so accounting for the success of “ON” is crucial.

ARMYs are clearly passionate about this issue, so for the YouTube social media team’s sake, we hope those numbers get restored soon.

BTS Hung Out at Katz’s Deli, Took Over Grand Central Station

BTS are currently doing the rounds in support of their brand new album MAP OF THE SOUL: 7, which dropped last Friday. They stopped by the TODAY Show on release day, then joined Jimmy Fallon for a special one-hour episode of The Tonight Show. Instead of the typical interview and performance combo shot at 30 Rock, BTS ran all around New York City with Fallon.

Related | BTS: Break The Internet

Interviewed during a long subway ride, BTS shared their thoughts on New York City — I particularly enjoyed RM’s impression of a New Yorker: “Hot dog. Coffee. New Yorkers like scarf and [are] like “IM SO BUSY FOR THE BUSINESS” — and what they’d do if they weren’t in a band. The verdict: RM, businessman, V, saxophonist, J-Hope, tennis player, Jin, actor, Jungkook, pro gamer, Jimin, the next Jimmy Fallon, Suga, producer. J-Hope couldn’t seem to resist dancing on the poles for much of the interview. The boys also answered a set of fan-sourced questions, and politely indulged Fallon in “Subway Olympics” games like rubber duck jousting. Kind souls.

Fallon took the band to NYC landmark Katz’s Deli, famous for very expensive, large sandwiches, and the When Harry Met Sally orgasm. BTS seemed respectably confused at the massive size of the portions, the lack of vegetables in the meal, and the massive logs of sausage brought to the table. After the boys were invited behind the counter, Fallon served BTS-made sandwiches to delighted customers.

When BTS comes to New York, they shut things down. This time, they quite literally closed down Grand Central Station, turning into a stage for first-ever performances of their new smash “On.” The show was full-throttle, complete with a drum line, an army of backup dancers, and choreo that filled the massive space.

The 7 Albums That Define the PAPER Staff

In the era of streaming and playlists, this week Music Twitter still insisted upon asking what honestly feels like an old fashioned question: What are seven albums define you?

A riff on the classic ranking your desert island discs formula, it induced a full-on office meltdown when posed to the editorial team. We love a meme, but no one wants to choose between Kanye records. Or Avril Lavigne ones, for that matter.

Still, we tried our best, and like to think the brutal honesty present here (Shrek soundtrack; The Essential Bob Dylan) is indicative of our music critic credibility, rather than lack thereof.

Below, in no particular order, the PAPER team’s painstaking, Gwen Stefani-heavy lists. Don’t judge too harshly!

Watch the New BTS Trailer

BTS‘ 2020 comeback is nigh. After announcing their new album, Map of the Soul: 7 this week, the group’s latest song release was met with feverish anticipation. Following the tried-and-true roll-out formula of past BTS albums –– a member drops a solo track that serves as a “trailer” for the entire album –– group member Suga raps and sings solo on a song titled “Interlude: Shadow.”

If Suga’s 2016 solo mixtape Agust D documented the struggle to make his dreams come true, then “Interlude: Shadow” poses an apt follow-up question: “What happens when you finally make it?” On the introspective track, Suga shares his anxieties and fears about fame, but acknowledges that, well, he wanted all of it.

None

Over a melancholy string instrumental, Suga opens the song with, “I wanna be a rap star/ I wanna be the top/ I wanna be a rockstar,” but when the trap beat kicks in, he admits, “I’m afraid, flying high is terrifying/ No one told me/ How lonely it is up here.” Though the song starts out pensive, the last third takes on a more defiant tone, as Suga raps about being simultaneously attracted to fame and wanting to run from it: “Yeah you are me, I’m you, now you do know/ We are one body, sometimes we will clash.”

Since its release earlier today, the song has received a mostly positive reception, with Army hashtag #TheLyrics trending on Twitter praising Suga’s introspection. And of course, it’s not a real BTS comeback if their fans aren’t creating theories on how a new release is tied to the rest of the BTS universe.

The Army is also making #7iscoming a trending topic, drumming up excitement for what the tenor of “Interlude: Shadow” suggests for the album to come. BTS’ Map of the Soul: 7 will be released February 21.

BTS – 134340 (English Translation) lyrics

If I could, I wanted to ask
Why you did what you did, why you chase me away
I still revolve around you without a name
The goodbye is colorless, the colors that don’t change

Oh I’ve got no name
I used to be your star
It must be nice that you’re a light
All I do is receive you as you are
Prosperity’s fallen
What does it matter to live out the rest of my life
I would get it until I die
Your sweltering stare
I still revolve around you and nothing has changed
But if love has no name
Everything has changed
Have you really found Eris? –
Tell me, what makes me lesser than that moon
Us is the plural form of u
Maybe I wasn’t there from the beginning
Someday you would understand these words
My season was always you
My cold heart is negative 248 degrees
It stopped the day you erased me
Damn

I still revolve around you
(I missed you, I lost you)
I’m running idly
(You erased me, you forgot me)

At one point, I was part of the world of the sun
(The song has stopped, the song has died)
At the heart of the star, there’s only an unpleasant layer of a fog
(You erased me, you forgot me)

There’s not much difference from yesterday ay
In the same day-to-day activities, only you don’t exist ay
I swear we were together until yesterday ay
It’s scary how only you don’t exist in a same day
To tell you the truth, the one year that you weren’t there
I was calm, I didn’t even have regrets
Like people usually do, but hold on
I don’t even remember your scent, wait
This perfume smells familiar ay
When my memories start to come back ay
I turn my head around and there
You’re smiling brightly and coming to me and by your side there’s…
(Hi) Hi
How have you been? I’ve been well
Rather than my heart that feels like it’s about to explode
The temperature of this moment is negative 248 degrees

I still revolve around you
(I missed you, I lost you)
I’m running idly
(You erased me, you forgot me)

At one point, I was part of the world of the sun
(The song has stopped, the song has died)
At the heart of the star, there’s only an unpleasant layer of a fog
(You erased me, you forgot me)

All I do is revolve around you
(Beyond the fog, I still watch you as you smile
Meaning, and you, don’t exist in this irregularity, the truth of my orbit)
All I do is running idly
(I am Pluto of numbers and darkness that may be hard for you to remember
But I would still revolve around you damn)

I still revolve around you
(I missed you, I lost you)
I’m running idly
(You erased me, you forgot me)

At one point, I was part of the world of the sun
(The song has stopped, the song has died)
At the heart of the star, there’s only an unpleasant layer of a fog
(You erased me, you forgot me)

[Verse 1: V]
At first sight, I could recognize you
As if we were calling for each other
The DNA in my blood vessels tell me
That it’s you I was looking all over for

[Verse 2: J-Hope, Rap Monster]
Our meeting is like a mathematical formula
Commandments of religion, providence of the universe;
The evidence of destiny given to me
You’re the source of my dream
Take it, take it
My hand reaching out to you is my chosen fate

Don’t worry, love
None of this is a coincidence
We’re totally different, baby
Because we’re the two who found our destiny

From the day of the universe’s creation and beyond
Through the infinite centuries and beyond
In the previous life and maybe the next too
We’re eternally together

I only focus on you
You steer me a little harder
The DNA of the genesis wants you
This is inevitable, I love us
We are the only true lovers

[Verse 4: Suga, Jimin, Jungkook]
Every time I see her, I freak out
Surprisingly, I keep gasping and it’s weird, maybe
This is the emotion they call love
Because from the very beginning, my heart runs to you

Rap Monster & Wale – Change

[Verse 1: Rap Monster]
Oh, tell me that dark could never win the light
Oh, tell me that wrong could never win the right
Baby, tell me that we gon’ someday stop the fight
And tell me that every, everything gon’ be alright
Oh tell me who’s stupid, baby, is it me or them?
Just tell me who’s insane, baby, is it me or them?
In this crazy world after patience, could we get the pearl?
But this world, which teaches me, preaches me how to curl
Oh, fuck the school
All we got is mad teachers and some visible classes
Divided spaces, and forever-lastin’ stresses
Everybody’s mad
Kill people with fingers on Twitter
More than a gun, more than a knife
The tip of your tongue just glitter
Would the pain always win you gain? (Nah)
How could you bet? It’s damn checkin’ game (Yeah)
We’re losin’ again, homie, we losin’ too many things
What should we tell our sons?
You know that they will be the men
Like you and me

[Pre-Chorus: Rap Monster]
If hope is a taste, what’s yours?
What you eat all day? (What you eat all day?)
And if your love is a game
Are we losin’, losin’? Oh

[Chorus: Rap Monster]
World is gonna change
(ooh ooh ooh)
World is gonna change
(ooh ooh ooh)
World is gonna change
(ooh ooh ooh)
World is gonna change
(ooh ooh ooh)

[Verse 2: Wale]
Yeah, yeah, tell me what is really real?
I’m tryna buy a new Ferrari for my newest deal
Baby girl say, "The world really hate us, huh?"
Pray a lot and maybe God give you Saint Laurent
Wish that I could change the world but they hold back
When it’s time to go, the people just be mad again
And what if I could change the world with a pen and pad?
When it’s time to vote, the people turn to mannequins
Challenge that
Namjoon, I’m the man too
I’m out in Chevy Chase the teachers used to lampoon
I sing songs, haikus
Over rap tunes, high IQ
Lookin’ for a Song
Hye Kyo, hey cuuutie
Yeah
I’m tryin’ to keep it a hunnit
Got no faith in the government
That’s why we need each other, hey
Laughin’ to keep from cryin’
Folarin’s a rap monster
BTS is the ARMY
Now it’s on me
I’ma keep the piece until I see some more peace
I’ma keep it G, forever keep it low-key
Take a trip to South Korea with some DC OGs
Chiefin’ OG, I’m chiefin’ OG
Hated by alt-rights and racist police
Say, woop woop, man, 12 comin’
They make them kids really freeze, when they say, "Freeze!" Freeze!

[Chorus: Rap Monster]
World is gonna change
(ooh ooh ooh)
World is gonna change
(ooh ooh ooh)
World is gonna change
(ooh ooh ooh)
World is gonna change
(ooh ooh ooh)

[Post-Chorus: Rap Monster]
World is gonna change
The world is gonna change
The world is gonna change
World is gonna change
The world is gonna change
The world is gonna change
World is gonna change
The world is gonna change
The world is gonna change
World is gonna change
The world is gonna change
The world is gonna change
World is gonna change

[Verse 3: Wale & Rap Monster]
Moonz, prayin’ for better days for you and I
I see progress via my daughter’s eyes
I think I think too much now and drink too much now
I numb it ’cause I don’t wanna cry
Prayin’ for better pace for you and I
I see some grass growin’ in winter’s eyes
I think I think too much now and drink too much now
To numb it ’cause I don’t wanna die
I believe that real friends love you to no limit (yeah)
I believe that real change lies in the mirror (yeah)
Since I was a lil’ one wasn’t ‘posed to get much status
Now they got they hands up for me like a stick up
Say, "Hands up, hands up" like a stick up
Hands up, hands up like a stick up
Since I was a lil’ one, wasn’t ‘posed to get much status
Got they hands up for me like a stick up, check it

[Outro: Wale & Rap Monster ]
Take it day by day, night by night
It’s on you and me if I’m gon’ shine
Not stoppin’ day by day, night by night
It’s on you and I
Moonz and the ARMY right
(My hands up)
